FAQs

What dish does the RoamSat use?

We offer RoamSat conversions for the original StarlinkGen2( RV /Motor Actuated Antennas), theGen3(Standard Non Actuated) and theMini.  Customers may supply their own existing Starlink hardware or purchase a new Starlink kit from RoamSat.  Please select the correct option in the RoamSat builder.

Which RoamSat is best for me?

The limitations and performance of your RoamSat device will be regulated by the Starlink antenna and hardware you chose.

The Starlink antennas differ in several key aspects, primarily performance, size, and intended use.

The Gen3 antenna is latest hardware from Starlink and geared for commercial and industrial use.  Customers needing premium speeds, higher bandwidth, multiple devices and heavier data usage will see improved results with this unit over the Mini.  The 3rd party access point highlighted in the RoamSat provides industry leading WiFi technology for the best performance in the most demanding applications.

The Starlink Mini is designed for individual users or travelers who prioritize portability and ease of use but don’t necessarily need the highest speeds or network capacity.   If you want high speed internet that you can travel the world and carry around inside a backpack, this is it!

Looking for something in the middle? The Gen2 Starlink antenna (now discontinued in the USA) provides all the same benefits as the Gen3, but in a 25% smaller package using 25-30% less power and a 20-40% longer battery life.   This package voids all Starlink warranties due to the modification process and can not be taken on commercial airlines due to the 360wh battery size.  Note: RoamSat is one of the few places you can still purchase a brand new in the box Gen2 Starlink antenna.

For special operations (government, military, defense, disaster relief, and emergency response ) we offer a Gen2 RoamSat with smaller 160wh batteries that can be taken on commercial airlines as carry on luggage.   These batteries can be removed and swapped easily without the need to disassemble the unit!

Can the RoamSat work with the High Performance / In-Motion Dish?

Yes.  All antennas will work in motion up to 100mph both on land and in the ocean and up to 250mph with mobile priority data enabled..

Will the RoamSat work in motion?

Yes.  Many are under the impression you must have the high performance / in motion dish to use in motion.  While Starlink prefers you buy the more expensive hardware package, the only reason the “roam” dish is not authorized for in motion use is because the internal motors are not designed to be used at speed.  The dish will continue working, however the internal motors will likely fail and as a result void the warranty.  The RoamSat modification eliminates the motors in order to combat these issues (now works at 80+ mph) and lays flat similar to the high performance dish.  And yes, it still voids the warranty.. While there is no guarantee Starlink won’t eventually modify its terms and conditions and enforce or cap the speed limit in the software, for now it works great.

Does laying the Roam dish flat affect performance / speed?

When Starlink was first made available there were limited satellites in the sky and the internal motors were helpful in acquiring the strongest signal.   Now with 1000s of satellites deployed into the sky, the phased array beam technology in each Starlink dish is able to decipher the strongest satellite signal without repositioning the dish.   While the Starlink app may trigger a misalignment issue, we have not seen any significant performance differences while being slightly misaligned.

Does the RoamSat work in the ocean?

Yes it does!  You do not need the marine / maritime / high performance dish.  You do, however, need “mobile priority data” enabled.  Whether you opt for a “pay as you go”using the data toggle feature in the Starlink app or Maritime Plan, the ability to use the RoamSat anywhere in the world is simply limited by the Starlink plan you choose to enroll in.

Do I need the maritime plan if i want to use the RoamSat in the ocean?

No!  The beauty of the RoamSat is the portability factor that allows you to use this device for business, pleasure or emergencies.  Whether it’s on your boat, RV, camper, truck, house or while backpacking etc many of our customers enjoy using the device both on land and in the ocean.  While the “priority/maritime” data plans will net faster speeds, they do not decipher your location and therefore charge for all data used throughout the monthly billing cycle.  The Starlink “Roam” plan provides unlimited data while on land, however it does not work in the ocean.  The “secret” that Starlink does not openly promote is the ability to have a standard “Roam” plan but toggle “priority” data in the app when you want either faster speeds or to use in the ocean.  When on land, simply uncheck the box and enjoy unlimited data for no additional charges beyond your standard monthly subscription.

Do you offer different mounting options?

Yes.  We offer suction mounts, magnets and threaded isolator bushings.  TheSea Sucker vacuum mountsprovide the most versatile mounting option and work on all smooth and flat surfaces.  They are rated for 120# each so when properly installed they are incredibly strong.  Therubber coated / non marring2.5″ magnets make attaching to steel surfaces (car/truck bodies, etc) extremely quick and secure.  They are rated for 60# each, so whatever temporary mounting option you prefer they are more than adequate to secure your device while in motion and in the most demanding conditions.  For those of you who want something even more secure, we offer 1/4-20 studded rubber isolators that provide additional vibration dampening and a more permanent mounting option.

How is the RoamSat powered?

The RoamSat has an onboard160-360whlifepo4 battery that provides 6-10 hrs of use before having to re-charge(varies based on the RoamSat model).  For extended run times, we include a12v DC power cable which bypasses the onboard battery and switch, allowing you to power the unit off any 12v battery.  The digital smart charger included allows you to charge and pass through power to your unit when 110v/220v AC power is present.

Why is the RoamSat so expensive?

The RoamSat is a premium device that was designed, built and assembled with only the best components available.   While there are surely ways to cut costs and corners, in the end what makes the RoamSat such a versatile and valuable piece is the simplicity of use, minimal footprint, and ability to operate in almost any conditions reliably without having to purchase upgraded or additional equipment.

Can you Travel with the RoamSat?

Federal aviation regulations prohibit traveling on commercial airlines with any battery over 160wh capacity (both check in and carry on)  With that being said, each person is allowed to carry (2) 160wh batteries on their persons while traveling.  The Mini RoamSat battery is 160wh so it falls within the guidelines for both domestic and international travel.  For standard Gen2 and Gen3 antennas, the battery would have to be removed and the unit would need to be powered with either the 12v DC cable or the optional 110v power supply (not the standard battery charger)  For special operations, we do offer a “traveler” series RoamSat using the Gen2 antenna with (2) smaller 160wh batteries installed in an external battery cavity.  This unit was designed specifically for emergency response, disaster relief and other special government operations.
